Surrogacy is deeply personal, emotional, empowering, complex, and, at times, misunderstood. That is exactly why we created Carrying the Conversation, a Reproductive Options podcast built around real surrogacy experience, honest education, and open dialogue.
In our very first episode, Kayla and Gabby sit down to introduce the podcast, the purpose behind it, and the conversations we hope to keep having with surrogates, intended parents, professionals, and anyone who is curious about this world.
This podcast is not about pressure. It is not about convincing anyone that surrogacy is the right path for them. It is about creating a space where people can learn, ask questions, hear real stories, and better understand what surrogacy can look like before, during, and after a match.
What Happens Before a Surrogacy Match?
Our first series is called Before the Match, and that title is intentional.
So much of the surrogacy conversation tends to focus on the match itself, pregnancy, delivery, and the relationship between surrogates and intended parents. Those are all important parts of the journey, but there is also a lot that happens before a match ever takes place.
Before someone becomes a surrogate, there are questions. A lot of them.
Why do women choose surrogacy?
What makes someone consider carrying for another family?
What role does compensation play?
What if someone starts the process and realizes it is not right for them?
Those are the conversations we want to have openly.
For some surrogates, the motivation starts with a personal connection to infertility or pregnancy loss. For others, it may come from watching a friend or family member go through surrogacy. Some women love pregnancy but feel complete in their own families. Some are drawn to the opportunity to help intended parents experience something life-changing.
And yes, for many, the financial component matters too.
Talking About Surrogacy Compensation Without Shame
One of the topics we are most excited to discuss in this series is the financial side of surrogacy.
There can still be a lot of hesitation around saying that compensation is part of the reason someone chooses to become a surrogate. But the reality is simple: surrogacy can be life-changing for the intended parents, and the compensation can be life-changing for the surrogate and her family too.
Those two things can both be true.
At Reproductive Options, we believe it is possible to lead with heart while also being honest about money. Wanting to help another family does not mean compensation should be ignored. Being compensated does not take away from the generosity, commitment, and emotional weight of the journey.
Surrogacy requires time, energy, sacrifice, support, and physical commitment. It is not something anyone should enter into lightly, and it is not something that should be reduced to only one motivation.
That is part of why Carrying the Conversation exists: to take the shame out of honest questions.
Kayla’s Path Into Egg Donation and Surrogacy
In this episode, Kayla also shares part of her own story and how she entered the world of egg donation and surrogacy.
Her introduction started more than 16 years ago with something that feels almost unbelievable now: a newspaper ad. Her mom clipped out an ad about becoming an egg donor, and that small moment opened the door to an entirely new path.
At the time, Kayla was young, in school, and working in accounting. Egg donation felt like a way to help someone while also earning money. But her first experience was not perfect. In fact, it showed her just how much better the process could be.
After going through that first donor cycle, she knew she wanted to be part of making the experience better for others. She reached out, asked what it would take to become a coordinator, and eventually stepped into the field professionally.
What started with one donor cycle eventually became a career, a passion, a surrogacy journey of her own, and later, the foundation for Reproductive Options.
How Personal Surrogacy Experience Shaped Reproductive Options
One thing that makes Reproductive Options different is that this work is not theoretical for us.
Kayla has been an egg donor. She has been a surrogate. She has worked in the field for years. She has seen what can go beautifully, and she has also seen where support, transparency, and ethics matter most.
That experience shaped how Reproductive Options was built.
For Kayla, creating Reproductive Options was about doing things differently. It was about building something she could believe in, something rooted in transparency, honesty, and care. It was about creating an agency where surrogates and intended parents could feel supported by people who truly understand the process.
That perspective will continue to guide the podcast.
Gabby’s Role: Why Different Perspectives Matter in Surrogacy Conversations
Gabby brings a different but equally important perspective to the conversation.
She has not been a surrogate, which allows her to ask questions from the place many listeners may be in: curious, interested, maybe unfamiliar with the process, and wanting to understand more.
She brings the creative side to Reproductive Options, helping with social media, blogs, podcast editing, and educational content. But on the podcast, she also gets to represent the audience in a meaningful way.
Sometimes, the best conversations happen when someone is willing to ask the question that other people may be thinking but are afraid to say out loud.
That is the energy we want this podcast to have. Warm. Curious. Honest. Unfiltered when needed. Always rooted in respect.
What Listeners Can Expect From Our Surrogacy Podcast
Carrying the Conversation will cover the topics people want to know about but may not always know how to ask.
We will talk about becoming a surrogate, choosing not to move forward, matching with intended parents, compensation, relationships, medical experiences, emotional moments, agency support, independent journeys, repeat surrogacy, closing the surrogacy chapter, and so much more.
We will also bring in guests with different experiences and perspectives. In upcoming episodes, listeners will hear from surrogates at different points in their journeys, including first-time surrogates, repeat surrogates, and women who have worked with different agencies or independent arrangements.
The goal is not to make every journey sound the same. It is to show how different every journey can be.
Starting the Conversation About Surrogacy
This first episode is exactly what the title promises: the beginning of a conversation.
Surrogacy is not for everyone, and that is okay. Asking questions is okay. Being unsure is okay. Wanting to understand the financial side is okay. Wanting to hear real stories before making a decision is okay.
Whether you are considering becoming a surrogate, supporting someone who is, exploring options as an intended parent, or simply curious about how this process works, we hope this podcast helps you feel more informed and less alone.
At Reproductive Options, we believe education should be transparent, supportive, and pressure-free.
So welcome to Carrying the Conversation. We are so glad you are here.
