The Process Of Becoming a Gestational Surrogate

Below is a general outline of the steps involved in becoming a surrogate:
Research and Education:
Before you begin your surrogacy journey, we strongly recommend understanding the legal and medical elements involved. Meet Eligibility Criteria:
Once you’ve made the decision to become a surrogate, and have reached out to an agency – there will be a qualifying step to ensure that you meet the criteria to become a surrogate. This is done for both the surrogate and the baby’s well being.
Typically, surrogates must be:
- Between 21 and 39
- Have a BMI between 19 and 30
- Have had at least one successful pregnancy
- Not have had more than 3 c-sections
- Have a stable living situation and financial stability.

Matching Process:
Now the fun begins – this is when we begin the matching process with intended parents.
Our team believes that the matching stage is one of the most important steps in the surrogate and intended parent’s journey. Unfortunately, it’s one that many agencies overlook. Health Screening & Legal Considerations:
From here, if qualified, you’ll undergo a thorough medical and psychological evaluation. This is where you’ll need to provide medical history and records, and may need to complete necessary medical tests or screenings. Again, this is because we know that there can be risk involved in pregnancy – this step ensures that it’s the right move for both you and the baby.
During this process, you’ll also consult with an attorney specializing in reproductive law. Your agency will help facilitate this, and ensure that you feel comfortable and informed during each step.
Medical Procedures & Pregnancy:
Once we’ve found your intended parents, in vitro fertilization (IVF) will be used to implant the embryo that has been fertilized in a lab.
This kind of procedure isn’t particularly painful for most surrogates, but can include some light cramping after. Typically though, this experience is one that’s so filled with joy for our surrogates.
Birth
Typically the intended parents will be present for the birth – this is to ensure you feel supported during the birth. Once the baby is born, the reproductive attorneys will finalize any legalities necessary depending on the state.
