Gestational Surrogacy | What Is It, How To Become a Surrogate & More

Did you know that more than 3.5 million babies are born each year in the US? But not all are genetically related to the birthing mother.

This is because a gestational surrogate is at work, changing a family’s life. Gestational surrogacy is a remarkable and compassionate solution for those who may be facing challenges in conceiving, carrying a pregnancy to term, or are LGBTQ+.

This method of assisted reproductive technology has increased in popularity in recent years, offering hope and fulfillment to those longing to become parents. In this blog, we’ll dig into the intricacies of gestational surrogacy, exploring what it really means, the process involved, and how you could become part of this transformative journey.

What Is Gestational Surrogacy:

Gestational surrogacy is a type of surrogacy where a woman carries a child conceived using the egg and sperm of the intended parents or donors. This means that the baby will be 100% related to their parent(s) and unrelated to the surrogate.

This differs from traditional surrogacy, where the surrogate contributes her own egg and is genetically related to the child. Laws differ from state to state, but often traditional surrogacy can be a more complicated situation – both legally and emotionally.

Reproductive Options specifically works with gestational surrogates – to allow you the opportunity to change a family’s life, with no genetic tie.

The Process Of Becoming a Gestational Surrogate

If you’re interested in becoming a surrogate, then it’s critical that you understand the process involved. This is not a quick decision, nor one that you should take lightly – but it is an incredible journey that can be just as rewarding and meaningful for the surrogate as it is for the parents.

Below is a general outline of the steps involved in becoming a surrogate:

Research and Education:

Before you begin your surrogacy journey, we strongly recommend understanding the legal and medical elements involved. During this process, you may also make the decision to work with a reputable agency – such as Reproductive Options – that can guide you during the process, and hold your hand during the legalities.

Meet Eligibility Criteria:

Once you’ve made the decision to become a surrogate, and have reached out to an agency – there will be a qualifying step to ensure that you meet the criteria to become a surrogate. This is done for both the surrogate and the baby’s well being.

Typically, surrogates must be:

  • Between 21 and 39
  • Have a BMI between 19 and 30
  • Have had at least one successful pregnancy
  • Not have had more than 3 c-sections
  • Have a stable living situation and financial stability.

You can see more details on the qualifications required here

Matching Process:

Now the fun begins – this is when we begin the matching process with intended parents.

Our team believes that the matching stage is one of the most important steps in the surrogate and intended parent’s journey. Unfortunately, it’s one that many agencies overlook. We spend the time to ensure that you are more than a number, and that you feel genuinely connected to the family that you’re helping to grow.

Health Screening & Legal Considerations:

From here, if qualified, you’ll undergo a thorough medical and psychological evaluation. This is where you’ll need to provide medical history and records, and may need to complete necessary medical tests or screenings. Again, this is because we know that there can be risk involved in pregnancy – this step ensures that it’s the right move for both you and the baby.

During this process, you’ll also consult with an attorney specializing in reproductive law. Your agency will help facilitate this, and ensure that you feel comfortable and informed during each step.

Medical Procedures & Pregnancy:

Once we’ve found your intended parents, in vitro fertilization (IVF) will be used to implant the embryo that has been fertilized in a lab.

This kind of procedure isn’t particularly painful for most surrogates, but can include some light cramping after. Typically though, this experience is one that’s so filled with joy for our surrogates.

Birth

Typically the intended parents will be present for the birth – this is to ensure you feel supported during the birth. Once the baby is born, the reproductive attorneys will finalize any legalities necessary depending on the state.

It’s important to note that the specific steps and requirements may vary depending on the country, state, and fertility clinic but Reproductive Options maintains ARSM guidelines for safe and ethical practices and remains up-to-date on surrogacy legalities per state. With over 25 years of industry experience and national professional relationships with fertility clinics and ART attorneys, owner Kayla Reveal and registered nurse Ashley Twedt will walk you through the entire journey ensuring your questions are answered and you receive the best care.
